Bali, Indonesia<\/strong> \u2014 Ahead of the <\/span>19th edition of Balinale \u2013 Bali International Film Festival<\/span>, Sanur will welcome a special prelude event, <\/span>Road to Balinale 2026<\/span>, on <\/span>Thursday, 30 April 2026<\/span> at <\/span>Bali Beach Garden Terrace, The Meru Sanur.<\/span><\/p>\n

Balinale 2026 is scheduled to take place from <\/span>1\u20137 June 2026<\/span>, with <\/span>Icon Bali Mall<\/span> as the main hub, screenings at <\/span>Cinema XXI<\/span>, and selected venues across Sanur.<\/span><\/p>\n

Road to Balinale 2026<\/span> is an evening of stories, cinema, and community by the sea, inviting Sanur into the festival journey before Balinale officially begins in June. More than a prelude, it reflects Sanur\u2019s growing place as a cultural host where international cinema, local community, and creative exchange come together in a setting deeply rooted in Bali. Bringing together the Sanur community and invited guests from hospitality, media, arts, business, and cultural circles, the evening is intended to capture Balinale\u2019s wider spirit of cultural connection and engagement through the world of film \u2014 where stories allow us to see life through different lenses, expand our understanding, and draw people closer across places, backgrounds, and experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n

As Indonesia\u2019s first and only <\/span>Academy Award\u00ae Qualifying Festival<\/span>, Balinale has strengthened its position as one of the country\u2019s most important international cultural platforms. In <\/span>2024<\/span>, the festival was officially approved as an Oscar\u00ae Qualifying Festival, creating a stronger pathway for filmmakers to gain international recognition through its short film competition.<\/span><\/p>\n

That momentum has continued to grow. Balinale\u2019s official materials state that the <\/span>2024 edition<\/span> showcased <\/span>60 films from 25 countries<\/span>, with <\/span>41 premieres<\/span>. In <\/span>2025<\/span>, the festival expanded further, presenting <\/span>over 70 films from 32 countries<\/span>, including <\/span>8 world premieres, 25 Asian premieres, and 16 international premieres<\/span>, alongside <\/span>23 Indonesian films<\/span>. Balinale also notes that the 2025 edition established itself in Sanur, screened the first-ever IMAX 3D in Bali, and hosted <\/span>50+ filmmakers from 10+ countries<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Balinale 2026 has built on this momentum with a record number of over 1,300 submissions from around the world, including Indonesia, reflecting the festival\u2019s expanding international reach. Through its official categories, <\/span>Short Narrative, Narrative Feature, Short Documentary, Documentary Feature, and Short Animation<\/span>, <\/span>the festival will present 100 films from 35 countries with 20 World, 10 International, and 26 Asian premieres, welcoming a rich range of stories and cinematic voices.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, Balinale continues to celebrate the growth of Indonesian cinema, including the emergence of promising young directors, the strength of new voices in fiction and documentary, and the advancing creativity and technology shaping animation and contemporary screen storytelling. More than a showcase, the festival reflects a broader movement in which Indonesian film is gaining confidence, sophistication, and wider international attention.

Beyond screenings, Balinale also continues to contribute to talent development and international creative collaboration. Its official programs include initiatives such as <\/span>Art of the Score by The Juilliard School<\/span>, developed in <\/span>2021<\/span> by <\/span>Dr. Edward Bilous<\/span>, Director of the Juilliard Center for Innovation in the Arts, which connects students creating original music for visual media with filmmakers from around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Road to Balinale 2026 also reflects the spirit of partnership behind the festival\u2019s continued growth. In Balinale\u2019s official public announcements, <\/span>Icon Bali Mall<\/span> is named as venue partner, <\/span>Cinema XXI<\/span> as official cinema partner, and <\/span>The Meru Sanur<\/span> as official hotel and venue partner. Balinale\u2019s official communications have also referenced support from the <\/span>Ministry of Culture<\/span>, the <\/span>Ministry of Creative Economy<\/span>, the <\/span>Bali Governor\u2019s Office<\/span>, and the <\/span>Denpasar Mayor\u2019s Office<\/span>, alongside broader endorsement by national and provincial governments.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2026 festival schedule already points to another vibrant edition, including <\/span>Opening Day on 1 June<\/span>, the <\/span>Bali Film Forum at The Meru Sanur<\/span>, an <\/span>OceanX screening hosted by Bali Ocean Days<\/span>, <\/span>Awards Night Celebrations<\/span>, and an <\/span>Open Air Closing Event<\/span>. Together, these moments reinforce Balinale\u2019s character as a festival that combines cinema, conversation, international exchange, and shared public experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this context, <\/span>Road to Balinale 2026<\/span> at the Bali Beach Garden Terrace, The Meru Sanur serves as an early invitation to gather, build anticipation, and place Sanur at the center of a wider cinematic conversation before the festival opens in June.
