Bali – Indonesia, February 7 and 8, 2025, will mark the second edition of Bali Ocean Days, an international marine conservation event aimed at promoting an inclusive and sustainable Blue Economy in Indonesia and beyond, which once again will be held at the InterContinental Bali Resort Jimbaran and organized in partnership with the Archipelagic & Island States Forum. The conference titled ‘Empowering Blue Tech and Advancing Sustainable Ocean Solutions’ will highlight these following six topics, essential to ocean protection and sustainable development: Marine Conservation Strategies & Public Policies, Impact Finance for a Sustainable Blue Economy, High Tech Solutions for Oceans, Sustainable Aquaculture & Fisheries, Marine Pollution Management, and Blue Carbon Ecosystems Conservation.
The 2nd Bali Ocean Days will feature a special presentation by Mr. Vincent Chalias, founder of Ocean Gardener, a Bali-based NGO dedicated to coral reef restoration. He will showcase their recent discovery of a Galaxea astreata colony near Nusa Penida, which could potentially be the largest coral in the world. This session is set to be a highlight of the event, alongside a premiere by Mr. Marco Garcia-Leon, presenting the findings of the UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) research about Criminal Marine Pollution. The closing ceremony will be another key moment of this conference with the SBS Foundation Award presented to Dr. Vincent Pieribone, New York-based co-CEO of OceanX, in recognition of their outstanding ‘Indonesia Mission 2024’.
The conference is dedicated to raise awareness among all communities about the importance of achieving a series of essential objectives for the future of our blue planet: reducing marine pollution, notably plastic debris, chemical waste and ocean acidification, protecting and restoring coral reefs and mangrove ecosystems as crucial blue carbon environments, reversing the overfishing crisis to save endangered species and ensuring the long-term availability of resources, and empowering coastal communities through education in marine conservation to support sustainable livelihoods.
Moderated by Marializia Hasni and Kania Sutisnawinata, two leading news anchors from Metro TV, together with Elle Watson, One.Bali founder engaged in reducing plastic pollution in Bali who will serve as Master of Ceremonies, the two-day conference will feature a stellar lineup of 40 prominent Indonesian and international speakers with different backgrounds and disciplines including government officials, financial institutions executives, environmental NGOs representatives, sustainable economy stakeholders and academics. Speakers traveling to Bali will share their key challenges, present policies, and explore synergies and long-term action plans to safeguard our marine environment.
“Building on the success of our prior edition, we are renewing this event to support the expansion of an Indonesian Blue Economy, defined by the World Bank as the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystems,” said Paul Tanjung Tan, founder of the Sky Blue Sea Foundation. Continuing, Yoke Darmawan, co-founder of Bali Ocean Days and chair of the Foundation “As the largest archipelago in the world, Indonesia plays a crucial role in the future of the world’s oceans, and considering environmental challenges that Bali has to face, the island is an appropriate host for an annual conference that puts marine conversation at its center.”
